The History of Kotagala local council.

District Development Councils were established under the Development Council Act No. 35 of 1980. Due to the development and council system that was in place since 1981, the Sulu Municipal Village Councils that existed at that time were abolished.
The powers and functions, assets and liabilities of those institutions were also assigned to the Development Councils. Accordingly, the offices of village councils and small town councils located in the region became the branches of the development council. It was administered under the district secretary of Kotagala, Kadapola and Nanuoya.
Then 258 local councils were established under the Local Council Act No. 15 of 1987. Among them was the Nuwara Eliya Regional Council. On 20-03-2018, Nuwara Eliya Regional Council was divided into three divisions and Kotagala Regional Council was formed.

Mr. Rajamani Prasanth was appointed as the chairman of Kotagala local council in the local government election held in 2018 and Mr. Rajamani Prasanth held the office of chairman of the council till 20-03-2023.
